X is planning to modify its block button, allowing blocked accounts to still view public posts, according to findings by app researcher Nima Owji. Elon Musk confirmed the update, explaining that blocked users won’t be able to engage with posts but will soon be able to see them.
“The block function will block that account from engaging with, but not block seeing, [a] public post,” Musk tweeted on Monday.
Owji noted that the usual “You’re blocked…” message may disappear soon, allowing blocked users to see posts as if they weren’t blocked. However, reposting, quoting, or replying will likely remain restricted.
This update changes the existing functionality, where blocked users could only bypass restrictions by logging out to view a public account. Now, the workaround will no longer be needed.
Around a decade ago, X, then known as Twitter, tried a similar approach but reversed it quickly due to backlash. The 2013 update allowed blocked users to follow and engage, leading to widespread criticism and a policy reversal. The current update, while not as extensive, may still raise concerns, especially among those using the block feature for safety reasons. The exact rollout date for the changes is yet to be announced.
Musk stated it was “high time this happened,” suggesting the shift reflects a long-overdue policy update for the platform. However, some users may feel the changes weaken important protections against harassment or unwanted interactions.
