I will explain How Does Twitter Rate Limit Work after the new announcement by Elon Musk, with trending #TwitterDown.
Twitter CEO Elon Musk imposed “temporary limits” on the number of tweets users can view on Saturday, amid complaints of users having problems accessing the service.
Beginning early Saturday AM EST, over 8,000 users reported to DownDetector — and many thousands more are likely not reporting — that they were confronted by alerts that read “Rate limit exceeded” or “Cannot retrieve tweets” or “Sorry, you are rate limited.” Please wait a few moments before attempting again” anytime they attempted to refresh their feed.
The sporadic outage — depending on the user, tweets would sometimes load, only load via the For You channel, or work perfectly fine — came at an inconvenient time for sports fans, who were trying to keep up with the deluge of news that comes with the start of both the NBA and NHL free agency periods.
In a post on Saturday, now-former Twitter CEO Musk blamed the problem on “extreme levels of data scraping & system manipulation,” and instead of offering a viable resolution or an anticipated repair time, he chose to penalize Twitter users by limiting the number of tweets that could be viewed.
How Does Twitter Rate Limit Work
Musk’s tweet at approximately 1 p.m. ET Saturday stated that verified users “are limited to reading 6000 posts/day,” while unverified accounts were limited to 600 per day. According to him, the limit for new and unverified counts will be 300.
He tweeted around two hours later, “Rate limits increasing soon to 8000 for verified, 800 for unverified, & 400 for new unverified.”
“Rate limited due to reading all the posts about rate limits,” Musk wrote, in what appears to be a sarcastic statement about all the hoopla on Twitter.
Then, less than an hour later, Musk increased the limitations to 10,000 for verified users, 1,000 for unverified users, and 500 for new unverified users.
It was unclear how the site determined what constituted a read tweet. It was also unclear whether the interim restrictions, which remained in effect as of 9 p.m. ET Saturday, would be lifted.
