The iPhone SE is finally getting a long-awaited redesign, though it’s expected to resemble the two-generation-old iPhone 14. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the next iPhone SE is likely to launch early next year and will adopt a design featuring a notch cutout at the top, similar to the iPhone 14. This could also mark the last Apple phone to feature a physical home button with integrated Touch ID.
While the past two SE models retained the iPhone 8’s design, this new look will offer thinner bezels and a larger screen, albeit still an LCD panel with a 60Hz refresh rate. The change may not make it a standout in terms of design, but the elimination of the thick bezels will result in more screen space. More exciting upgrades include a larger battery and support for MagSafe.
The most notable improvement, however, could be the integration of Apple Intelligence — a bundle of generative AI features. This includes a revamped Siri, deeper app integration, and enhanced AI capabilities possibly powered by ChatGPT-like functions. The phone is expected to run on Apple’s latest silicon, likely the A18 chip, following the trend of previous SE models. But with these cutting-edge features, a price increase is likely, much like the “5G tax” on the current SE model.
Overall, the next iPhone SE promises a compelling update for those seeking a more affordable yet reliable device without the complexities of premium features like multiple cameras or capacitive buttons. Alongside the SE, Bloomberg also reports that Apple will be releasing updated iPads and a new version of the Magic Keyboard for the iPad Air next year.
