The iPhone has consistently been known for its solid camera performance, and while Google’s Pixel series is often lauded for its photography prowess, the iPhone has made continuous strides with each new model. Recently, a user on Threads shared a side-by-side comparison that highlights just how far the iPhone camera has come in the past decade. The results are undeniably impressive, but what’s even more surprising is how good the iPhone camera was 10 years ago.
Threads user @yantastic posted two images of the same location. One shot was captured using the iPhone 6, and the other with the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Despite the years between the two models, the differences between the photos are not as drastic as one might assume. The iPhone 6 photo, positioned on the left, is darker with less sharp details and a lower resolution, yet it still holds up better than many might remember. On the right, the iPhone 16 Pro Max showcases significant improvements, with more vivid colors, enhanced dynamic range, and greater clarity in both bright and shadowed areas.
The iPhone 16 Pro Max also stands out with its ability to capture finer details, such as the stationary white car in the image. While the iPhone 6 photo makes the car look slightly blurred, the newer model delivers clean, crisp edges that make the vehicle appear perfectly still.
Over the years, the camera specs have dramatically improved as well. The iPhone 6 featured an 8MP camera, whereas the iPhone 16 Pro Max boasts an impressive 48MP main camera, along with a 12MP telephoto lens and a 48MP ultrawide camera. While the iPhone 6 did offer automatic HDR, the latest iteration’s HDR capabilities are clearly more advanced.
Adding multiple cameras to the back of newer iPhones has certainly elevated photo quality, but it’s worth noting that the iPhone 6 managed to deliver respectable results with just a single lens.
