Currently, Apple Intelligence is available only in U.S. English and is not accessible in the EU or China due to regulatory issues. In the U.S., the feature can be used on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and the new iPhone 16 series.
TechCrunch has tested the developer beta of iOS 18.1 during their review of the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Key features include cross-system writing tools, a Clean Up tool for Photos, and a major update to Siri.
The Writing Tools utilize generative AI for tasks like proofreading, summarizing, and rewriting text in various styles such as professional, concise, and friendly. In the Mail app, users benefit from Smart Reply, message prioritization, and summaries.
Siri has undergone a significant redesign, replacing the colorful icon with illuminated borders that do not obscure text. Siri now better understands speech errors and allows for typed commands when speaking isn’t possible.
A new Siri feature, product knowledge, enables users to ask how to perform various on-device tasks, such as screen recording or resetting an AirTag. Additional features like conversational context and Visual Intelligence are forthcoming.
In Photos, the standout addition is Clean Up, similar to Google’s Magic Eraser, which removes objects by generating a background over them. Search functionality has been enhanced for natural language queries, and users can create Memories with text prompts.
To enable Apple Intelligence, users need to go to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > Join the Apple Intelligence waitlist. Joining the public beta program is straightforward via beta.apple.com.
More Apple Intelligence features are expected to be released later this year.
