Qualcomm Smart Transmit is a set of core features available on the Qualcomm chipset that intelligently manages wireless, power, network selection and more to provide the best overall network experience. Version 3.0 is a simple evolution. In version 3.0, Smart Transmit now integrates WiFi and Bluetooth into the architecture.

mmWave 5G Standalone

Devices using the X70 chipset can establish a mmWave 5G connection independently of other connections. This is called a “standalone” or “SA” connection. Previously, to use a mmWave 5G connection, the network and device had to first use a Sub6 5G (or 4G LTE) connection as the first connection before determining that mmWave was available. It was switched faster.

With proper network configuration, devices can be easily migrated directly to mmWave 5G for faster and more network efficiency. This is important because waiting for Sub6 to be passed to mmWave often completely negates the potential benefits of these high speeds. Also, if you are traveling by phone, you may lose your connection before the data is transferred.

Given the inherent limitations of the mmWave (which is struggling to maintain connectivity around distances and obstacles), there are probably not many mobile use cases for standalone mmWave 5G. However, this development can be very important for fixed 5G wireless access in homes and businesses where base stations rarely (or at all) move, as well as 5G mobile hotspots and 5G integrated laptops.

Sub-6 5G 3x carrier aggregation

These new features and milestones are made possible by the upgradeable architecture of the Snapdragon X70. The upgradeable architecture first introduced on the Snapdragon X65 modem allows Qualcomm to bring new features to the modem through software upgrades. The Snapdragon X70 modem is currently sampling to OEM. The first commercial devices based on the new modem are expected to hit the market at the end of 2022.
