You can now explore Apple’s latest AI-powered features by installing the iOS 18.1 public beta on a supported iPhone, ahead of the official release on October 28. Here’s a glimpse of what’s included when you upgrade to iOS 18.1.
Writing Tools: Integrated into any app where you type, Apple Intelligence-powered writing tools help refine your text or spark new ideas. These tools check your spelling and grammar, provide text summaries, and suggest rewrites to match a particular tone.
Photo Features: The Photos app sees three major updates. The new Clean Up tool removes unwanted people and objects from images. Memory Movie uses text prompts to create custom slideshows from your media, and natural language search makes it easier to find specific photos and videos.
Summaries: All iPhones capable of running iOS 18 will benefit from a new audio recording feature in the Notes app, but Apple Intelligence-enabled phones take it further by offering automatic summaries of your recordings. Additionally, you can record phone calls and access transcripts and summaries for later reference.
Siri: Siri’s getting smarter over time, with future updates allowing the assistant to understand and act on what’s displayed on your screen. In iOS 18.1, Siri’s already improved with a new visual indicator on the screen, smarter question handling, and the ability to respond to follow-up questions without needing context repeated. It also offers troubleshooting support for Apple products.
Mail: A broader Mail overhaul is coming with iOS 18, organizing your inbox into categories like personal messages, receipts, and newsletters. In iOS 18.1, you’ll notice message summaries in your inbox instead of just seeing the first few lines. Notifications also summarize alerts. Other updates include priority messages, which highlight important emails with actions, and smart replies for quicker responses.
Keep in mind that to take full advantage of Apple Intelligence features, you’ll need a top-tier iPhone like the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or one of the new iPhone 16 models when the rollout begins.
