If you have a PC, you’re probably familiar with Windows Task Manager, and if you have a Mac, you’re probably familiar with Activity Monitor. When a software doesn’t operate as intended or anything goes wrong, you can use Task Manager to terminate certain programs and processes and get back on your feet.
You can do the same thing on Google Chrome on Windows and Mac. At its foundation, the Task Manager in Google Chrome is very similar to the Task Manager in Windows. If a page or extension isn’t operating properly, you can use Google Chrome’s Task Manager to terminate the process, essentially sparing you from having to restart the browser.
Enabling the Task Manager
Chrome’s Task Manager is fairly similar to other task managers in that it can be accessed via a keyboard shortcut or through the app. On Windows, press Shift + Esc, or go to the three-dot menu, mouse over More tools, and select Task.
You’ll notice a window full with processes when you launch Task Manager. Open tabs or extensions that are operating in the background could be among them. This is the place to go if you’ve ever wanted to see your tabs and addons rendered.
It’s self-evident that the more tabs and extensions you have open, the slower Chrome becomes. You can check which processes are using the most RAM and resources in the Task Manager. The process that utilizes the most resources will be at the top, while idle extensions that don’t use many or any resources will be at the bottom. You’ll also notice that certain tabs have many processes, which are labeled with a blue line along the window’s left side.
Ending Any Task
You can simply kill a process in Chrome if it isn’t functioning as expected. A word of caution: stopping a process can sometimes cause Chrome to malfunction, so only do it if you know what you’re stopping.
On your computer, launch Google Chrome.
Hover over More tools and pick Task Manager after pressing Shift + Esc (Windows) or the three-dot menu in the top-right.
Although your current tab will be highlighted, you can choose another.
After you’ve chosen a process, click Finish.
That’ll bring the procedure to a close. While browsing the internet, this is a fantastic technique to get rid of processes that consume a lot of resources. Google Chrome’s Task Manager may also be used to figure out which extensions are using memory.
