Whether you’re using the standard DualSense, the customizable DualSense Edge, or a third-party option, syncing your PS5 controller is essential to start gaming. While it’s a simple process, it’s understandable to get confused if you’re unfamiliar with the steps.
This guide will walk you through syncing your PS5 controller with your PS5 console. If you’re looking to sync your controller to a PC or update it via your computer, we’ve covered that too in a different post. For those still using a PS4 controller, you might be in the wrong generation, but we’ve got guides for that as well.
Steps to Sync a PS5 Controller with Your Console
The PS5 comes with one DualSense controller and a USB-C to USB-A cable for charging and connecting. Here’s how to sync your controller:
Step 1: Turn on your PS5 and plug the USB-A end of the cable into one of the console’s USB ports (front or back).
Step 2: Connect the USB-C end to the controller. For a DualSense controller, this port is located at the top.
Step 3: Press the PS button on the controller (just below the speaker).
Step 4: The controller will blink briefly, then light up when powered on. Once the lights turn blue, the controller is synced.
At this point, you can disconnect the cable and enjoy wireless gaming. Remember to charge your controller periodically using the cable or a charging dock. Additionally, you might need to update your controller’s firmware, and the system will notify you if so.
Syncing Additional Controllers
The PS5 supports up to four controllers at once, which is perfect for local multiplayer. While you can sync each one using the USB cable method mentioned earlier, it’s faster to do it wirelessly after the first controller is paired. Here’s how:
Step 1: Ensure the additional controller is turned off (if it’s on, hold the PS button for a few seconds to power it down).
Step 2: With the synced controller, navigate to Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories.
Step 3: On the new controller, press and hold both the PS button and the Create button (located above the d-pad on the left) simultaneously.
Step 4: When the console detects the new controller, it will appear as an “Accessory found.” Select it with the original controller to complete the pairing.
Repeat these steps for any additional controllers, up to a total of four.
