I will be listing essential programs and software for all PC users regardless of the window’s version your using from windows 7 at least this will work for you and they are mostly free to use although some are paid.
1. Internet browsers: Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox
Before downloading other programs and software you need a to first download an updated browser and the best is Google chrome and then Mozilla although most time i only use updated Internet Explore and Google Chrome to download other software.

2. File compressor and Extractor: Win Rar and 7-zip
These will help you to unzip downloaded folders that are compressed or you want to compress your folder and upload this is very useful, if you download some software or files as a compressed file you will need a program to extract the file before you can access it and that’s where you need either Win Rar or 7-zip they are both free but you can donate to the company if you want.

3. Media player: VLC and k-lite codec player
You might want to watch come videos you downloaded on your local drive and depending on the video format that you have you might need different video player but having VLC that plays a lot of video formats but there are situations where you downloaded a video and VLC cant play it that is where K-lite Codec player comes in and you can easily get them for free.

4. Security: Update your windows defender or AVG antivirus
I will not recommend any other antivirus than these two if the cant do the job no other antivirus can, windows defender is more compactible updated and free for every windows pc, but if you always plugin USB drive to your Pc then you will need to install AVG antivirus because its what will defend you from USB virus attacks and also pay attention to windows defenders notifications. Although sometimes the two antivirus applications can detect each other as a virus.

5. Documents Editor: LibreOffice and Microsoft Suite
LibreOffice is productive tool used for Writing (word processing), Calculating (spreadsheets), Impress (presentations), Draw (vector graphics and flowcharts), Base (databases), and Math (formula editing). while the LibreOffice is free and can do all those, the Microsoft Office and do equally the same but the Microsoft suit is not free and its more populated and widely used that the other.

6. Professional Documents: Adobe Acrobat reader and Foxit reader
if you want to easily create and read documents you can easily do that with Adobe Acrobat Reader although the acrobat reader if free but if you download the pro you can create and read the PDF documents with it, and you can also get Foxit Reader for free to read all PDF documents.

you can easily save your files to cloud with these software to prevent loss of files and important documents with easy. There are enough allocated space on both software’s which you cant easily use up. with these platforms you can easily share your backup up files with anyone online.
