At this year’s Google I/O, a set of new safety features was introduced to enhance Android device security, particularly in cases of theft. These include Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, and Remote Lock, all aimed at protecting your phone from unauthorized use or setup by malicious actors.
Some of these features were expected to roll out with the Android 15 release, which is imminent. However, according to Mishaal Rahman and 9to5Google, U.S. users are already seeing them after an initial test in Brazil.
Theft Detection Lock is designed to recognize suspicious movements typically associated with theft, triggering an automatic screen lock to prevent unauthorized access. The feature leverages onboard sensors and network connectivity to detect such events.
Offline Device Lock ensures that if a thief tries to keep your device offline to avoid tracking, the screen will lock. Additionally, it activates if there are multiple failed attempts to unlock the phone.
Remote Lock allows users to lock their device remotely using the Android Find My Device page, provided they pass a security check and use the same number active on the stolen phone. If the phone is offline, the remote lock will engage once it reconnects to the internet.
These features will be available for devices running Android 15 or newer. Rollout appears to be phased, with U.S. users receiving access first, though Digital Trends noted that devices like the Google Pixel 9 and OnePlus Open have yet to see the update.
