OpenAI has begun rolling out its Advanced Voice Mode (AVM) feature to more ChatGPT users, starting with those subscribed to the Plus and Teams tiers. This rollout, which started on Tuesday, enhances the way users interact with ChatGPT through voice, making conversations feel more natural and fluid. Enterprise and Education customers can expect to receive access next week.
As part of this expansion, AVM introduces a refreshed design, replacing the older black dot animations with a modern blue animated sphere. Users will be notified via a pop-up within the ChatGPT app once AVM becomes available to them, indicated next to the voice icon.
OpenAI is also adding five new voices—Arbor, Maple, Sol, Spruce, and Vale—bringing the total number of voices to nine, a lineup reminiscent of nature-themed names. The new voices aim to enhance the natural feel of using the tool, although one notable absence is “Sky,” a voice removed after it led to legal concerns over its resemblance to Scarlett Johansson’s voice.
While the update doesn’t yet include ChatGPT’s anticipated video and screen sharing features, OpenAI has improved AVM’s ability to understand accents and deliver smoother, faster conversations. Early testers reported glitches in previous versions, but OpenAI claims those issues have been addressed.
In addition to these voice updates, OpenAI has integrated its Custom Instructions and Memory features into AVM. These allow users to customize ChatGPT’s responses and retain memory of previous conversations, offering a more personalized experience.
Currently, AVM isn’t available in several regions, including the EU, UK, and parts of Northern Europe, but OpenAI is expected to expand availability over time.
